CEC XX Raises $750 for CHFS!

The CEC is happy to announced that it raised $750 for its donation to the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. This total surpasses the $600 donation to the CHFS made by the CEC last year. The CEC’s three-year running total for its donations to the CHFS is $1850. Thanks to all of you who sold and bought tickets, as well as those who made prize donations for the charity draw.

Congrats to the Salted Nuts for their victory in CEC XX!

The Nuts battled back from a 2-3 round robin robin record and fifth place round robin finish, to rally for three straight wins in the playoffs to win the championship. The Salted Nuts’ roster is comprised of C. Jim Larkins, Jason Langan, James Gulak, Jamie Wehrens, Marc McGrath, Tyler Dolan, and goaltender Jason Wiggins. They defeated the silver medalists, Cratchit’s Hatchets (C. Kevin Wipf, Shannon Fekete, Ryan Smith, Jesse Renneberg, Steve Kristjansson, Brad Mitchell, and goaltender Brett Harvey), by a score of 3-2 in the final.

In the bronze medal game, the Misteltoe Make Out (C. Nick Findlay, Mike Crowe, Kris Brekke, Brady Thompson, Rick Day, and goaltender Fracois Leger) defeated the defending champions, Tinsel Time (C. Riley Day, Tyson Vogel, Guillermo Salazaar, Graham Mitchell, Beau Mitchell, Darren Tew, and goaltender Tyler Ostapovitch), by a score of 5-2.

Medals were handed out to the top three teams for the first time this year in recognition of the World Junior Hockey Championships being played in Saskatoon in late December-early January, and the Winter Olympic Hockey Tournament taking place in Vancouver in February. The men’s team roster was announced on December 30th in Saskatoon. This is the second time these two events have converged with the CEC. The very first CEC was played only days before the World Junior Hockey tournament was last played in Saskatoon, in late December 1990-early January 1991. Also, the CEC was in the Hockey Hall of Fame the day that Wayne Gretzky announced the roster for the men’s Olympic hockey team that went on to win the gold medal in 2002.

The windchill made for frigid conditions at the twentieth CEC hockey tournament, on the evening of December 23rd. The wind was blowing out of the East, and took temperatures down below the equivalent of -30C. In addition, the lighting at the new rink is a problem, however, especially on the East end. The good news was that CEC XX was played on the best ice surface it has seen since the move to the new Brevoort Park Rink in 2004. Close to 25 floods were put down on the Brevoort Park hockey rink, skating rink, and beginner rink since late November.
